School vouchers in San Antonio: what Texas actually pays

Texas calls its program an Education Freedom Account. Here's what a San Antonio family can get, how the region did in year one, and what to do before the next window.

The amounts

For 2026-27, a student at a participating private school receives $10,474. A student with a current IEP can receive up to $30,000 depending on their home district, and a homeschool student receives $2,000.

How San Antonio did in year one

By July 29, 2026, families in the San Antonio education service region held 10,495 funded accounts. Northside ISD residents held 2,271, the third-most of any district in Texas. North East ISD (1,536), San Antonio ISD (972), Comal ISD (878) and Judson ISD (716) followed.

Who used it

Axios San Antonio reported in August that about 70% of participants statewide had been in private school or homeschool before, and that 80% come from households under 200% of the federal poverty line.

Next year's line

In year two, siblings of current participants are placed first, then new eligible applicants, then former participants coming back from public school. Current participants in good standing don't reapply.

What to do now

Join the state's interest list. Have your federal tax return ready for income verification. Make sure your Texas address is current. Ask two or three schools whether they take TEFA and what their tuition is.
