Texas pays $10,474 a year toward private school. San Antonio families are already using it.
Families in the San Antonio region held 10,495 funded Education Freedom Accounts by late July. 99 K-12 schools and 167 pre-K providers in our area take them. We'll show you how the account works with Catholic aid, church discounts, IEP funding and military pre-K.

Funding sources for San Antonio families
The state account and the IEP add-on, homeschool and pre-K tiers, the Archdiocese's Hope for the Future, child care assistance, the 2027 federal credit, and school and partner aid.
Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA)
Texas's education savings account. For 2026-27 a San Antonio student at a participating private school receives $10,474, paid to the school through the state's platform in three deposits.

A TEFA student with a current IEP on file with the Texas Education Agency gets the base award plus a district add-on at a participating private school, capped at $30,000.

A TEFA student who isn't enrolled at a participating private school (most often a homeschooler) receives $2,000 a year, all of it deposited on July 1.

Starting January 2027, taxpayers in opt-in states get a federal credit of up to $1,700 for gifts to scholarship granting organizations. Texas announced it would opt in on December 10, 2025.

Hope for the Future is the Archdiocese of San Antonio's tuition assistance fund for its Catholic schools. The Archdiocese says its funds are now reserved for families who don't receive TEFA.

TEFA pre-K is limited to children who meet a free pre-K criterion. A child of an active-duty service member meets one, at any rank and any income.
On-base districts pay more for IEPs
A Lackland ISD resident with a mainstream IEP totals $19,208. For Randolph Field ISD it's $18,288.

TEFA has application windows. Join the interest list before you arrive, and pay tuition as you go if a PCS move is likely.
