Federal Scholarship Tax Credit (2027)

Starting January 2027, taxpayers in opt-in states get a federal credit of up to $1,700 for gifts to scholarship granting organizations. Texas announced it would opt in on December 10, 2025.

The 2025 federal tax law created the credit. A taxpayer can redirect up to $1,700 of federal tax to a certified scholarship organization and take a full credit.

The income line is 300% of area median income, which covers most San Antonio households. Unlike TEFA, the pool isn't capped by a state budget. It grows with donations.

For San Antonio families it can be a second layer on top of TEFA, or a bridge for a waitlisted family. We'll add the organizations serving Bexar County as they are certified.
